ATHLETES TAKE FLIGHT AT WHISTLER OLYMPIC PARK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Whistler, BC: Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) is very excited to activate the ski jumps on March 31st for the National Large Hill Ski Jumping/ Nordic Combined Championships. This is the first time the ski jumps have been used since the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. This event is hosted by the Callaghan Winter Sports Club and welcomes athletes to participate in a week-long training camp culminating with the championship events on Saturday March 31st.
The list of athletes attending the training camp and national championships is confirmed as the following:
- 26 Canadian athletes (men/women)
- 11 USA athletes
- 2 German athletes
With the strong structural similarities between the ski jumps at WOP and those constructed in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Games, this event has attracted some big names. The star-studded Canadian field begins with MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes, Canadian record holder in Ski Flying, and continues with the talented Canadian Women's team.
Renowned for their dedication to the sport, the Canadian Women's team played a pivotal role in establishing women's Ski Jumping as an Olympic sport for the 2014 Winter Games. Not to be missed is 16-year-old Taylor Henrich of Alberta who made history by becoming the first Canadian woman to compete in an Olympic Ski Jumping competition at the Youth Olympic Games this past January in Innsbruck.
Also in attendance will be a German National Team coach and two athletes- Pascal Bodmer and Martin Schmitt. Martin has won numerous Olympic and World Cup medals in individual events and as part of the German Team. This includes being a member of the Silver medal team in the Ski Jumping team event in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. He has a significant following around the world and will be a highlight of both the training and competition at WOP.
During the competition, a free pancake breakfast prepared by Whistler Cooks will be held from 9:00am-11:00am at the bottom of the ski jumps on Saturday, March 31st. A $2.00 donation is suggested to benefit Callaghan Winter Sports Club.
Training runs the week of March 24th to March 30th in the mornings. For full event details please visit www.whistlerolympicpark.com/events.
Whistler Olympic Park is operated by Whistler Sport Legacies, a non-profit organization responsible for Whistler Olympic Park, the Whistler Sliding Centre, and the Whistler Athletes’ Centre. Each facility plays a unique role in inspiring sport excellence for the benefit of athletes, residents, and visitors. Participation in WOP’s recreational activities helps support the growth of Nordic sport in the Sea to Sky corridor.
